Young at heart

Your Youth Workers

Vicky Morris and Andy Evans are our local Youth Workers. They have been working hard over the last few years getting to know the young people in Sketty Park and supporting them any way they can. They work closely with Fred Lerwell, our PCSO, to raise the profile of young people in the community and are helping to engage them in community life. Over recent years they have been involved in setting up football and netball teams, together with organising outings that the young people would enjoy. They have also supported the young people in raising money for good causes, by organising activities like car washes, donating £150 to Water Aid and a further £100 to the NSPCC. Recently the young people have been involved in fishing trips, gorge walking and lots of sports activities.

Come join us.

If you are a young person living in the area and would you to get involved there are weekly sports activities running in Parklands Primary School playground on Wednesdays 5.30 – 7pm. You are very welcome to join us, kick a ball around, make some new friends and have a laugh. Or if you would like to know more information about what is going on in the area for young people email: skettyyouthproject@hotmail.com

” I recently took part in an activity that my local Youth Workers arranged for young people in Sketty Park: Gorge Walking. I was very nervous about going at first as I didn’t know anything about Gorge Walking or what I ad to do. When we arrived, we had a safety chat and check, and did some ice breaker games which helped us to get to know everyone’s names. We then set off in the water (it was cold) and did a few tasks e.g. Jumping 20ft, 25ft and 30ft drops into water. It was really good fun. Everyone enjoyed the slide and we then played another game called Monkey Branches where we had to get from one side to the other without touching he floor. We then went through a tunnel and had to climb over boulders to get to the top. We had a chocolate and water once we reached the top, it was very refreshing. At the end we had to clean out wetsuits and then got dropped home. I really enjoyed Gorge Walking and I want to thank my Local PCSO and Youth Workers for taking me. I would definitely like to do it again ” .  Sam Found – Sketty Youth Team (SYT)

” My name is Dan Allen and I’m a member of the Sketty Youth Team (S.Y.T). We formed the S.Y.T after a number of successful events such as Car washes and litter picks. One of our more successful projects was the inter-generational buffet. We did the buffet to say thank you to everyone that have helped us set up the bowls team and to show some of the community a film that we produced about young people in Sketty Park having othing to do and nowhere to go. We decided to take up Bowls when it came up in conversation in a local PACT meeting. Our local PCSO and youth workers set this up and we have been practicing every Monday after school. We have had a lot of fun during Bowls and we’ve got to know a lot of the older generation through doing this, and have had a good laugh playing bowls alongside them. We have also been interviewed by BBC adio Wales for the work we have done with the Bowls team and have been in the Evening Post. We’re now hoping to do more in the community to raise the profile of young people and for the community to understand what young people want. We have also had treats from our Youth Workers for all our hard work. One of the treats was going George walking in Neath valley ” . Dan – SYT
