13:30 at Sketty Park Community CentreWe are a small group who meet once a week on a Wednesday afternoon 1pm at Sketty Park Community Centre, to learn more about our cameras and how best to get the most out of them. We have been out and about to Clyne Park and Singleton Botanical Gardens, taking photos. We have also just finished an environment project, where we took photos of Sketty Park, showing the good and the bad. These photos will be used in different community and environment projects. If you don’t own a camera, but you would still like a go, then this would be no problem as there are cameras available for you to use. So if you are interested come along and give it a go. At the moment we have just started a series of taught classes run by SBREC. You would be made most welcome.

We have been out and about to Clyne Park and Singleton Botanical Gardens, taking photos. We have also just finished an environment project, where we took photos of Sketty Park, showing the good and the bad. These photos will be used in different community and environment projects. If you don’t own a camera, but you would still like a go, then this would be no problem as there are cameras available for you to use. So if you are interested come along and give it a go. At the moment we have just started a series of taught classes run by SBREC. You would be made most welcome.

With lots of older people, sheltered housing, family housing and residential homes in the community. We had the first planning meeting for this forum in July last year where we agreed to plan an event/workshop to find out their needs and take forward their say on what goes on and what needs to be in Sketty Park, therefore we are holding the launch event on Wednesday 30th March 2011 from 3-5pm, Community Centre, Heather Crescent, Sketty Park. The event will be opened by a Choir, after which there will be a consultation using interactive voting equipment followed by an open discussion on life in Sketty Park. Dennis from LASA Credit union will also give a short talk. There will be High Tea served through out the event which will be finished off with a dance display and a chance for people to join in. all 50+ local residents are welcome to attend

Safer Routes in Sketty Park

18:30 at Sketty Park Community CentreMonday the 31st of January will see a public meeting in the Community Centre at 6pm for all residents of Sketty Park to come together to discuss making travel by foot and bicycle in the community safer for all. Its aim is to put together a bid for the Welsh Assembly Governments Safer Routes in Communities programme. This programme aims to improve accessibility and safety through funding capital works such as; crossings, traffic calming measures, positions of bus stops, cyclepaths, footpaths and secure cycle facilities. The deadline for applications is October 2011 and if approved works would commence and be completed within the following financial year, i.e. April 2012 – March 2013. The success rate for applicants is very good so we are optimistic that by working closely with the community and the Road Safety Team then Sketty Park will see positive change very soon. Both Olchfa and Parklands Schools will be involved in the project, working with the children and young people of the area to write up two travel plans which will detail how they get to and from school, what problems they encounter in doing so and what they would like to see change in order for their routes to become safer, healthier and more environmentally friendly. Rocky the Road Safety Rooster will be visiting the schools to support the campaign and we could see teams of young people documenting their journeys and walking bus days promoting the benefits of walking to school. A third travel plan will be written up by the wider community. The meeting on the 31st will consist of mapping out the area of Sketty Park and highlighting places where people feel there are problems. An example of this could be difficulty for people crossing the road to get to the shops. A public questionnaire will also be drawn up by those at the meeting asking about such difficulties and looking for solutions which will be brought around to all households. Issues of road safety are quite prominent in Sketty Park and have often been brought up at the regular PACT meetings held in the Community Centre. If you have any concerns about how people travel about and/or any ideas on what you would like to see happen please come down to the Community Centre on Monday 31st January. It is vital that the people of Sketty Park are involved from the beginning in order for the changes that go through to be ones that the people of Sketty Park want. Once this meeting is held and the questionnaires have come back a Steering Group will be formed to look at the findings and pull together the three Travel Plans into one bid. A team of Road Safety engineers will then come and look at the feasibility of the options. A draft proposal of the bid will then be brought back to the community via another public meeting for approval. This project will hopefully be an ideal example of how our community can work together to change its environment.

18:00 at Parkland Church, Maes y gollen, Sketty ParkDuring 2009 Communities First, South Wales Police, the Youth Service, Olchfa, Bishop’s Gore and Parkland Schools, local churches, organisations and groups, and others, met regularly to discuss the issues and needs regarding provision for children and young people in Sketty Park. In May of 2010 Communities First started a phase of consultation activities to establish local needs and opinions, which will help to inform a future development plan for local provision. This work has so far included consultation work at Olchfa and Parkland Schools with a total of 406 responses given. Olchfa Priorities: 1. Playground for older children, 2. Multi User Games Area, 3. Youth Centre, 4. Skate Park, 5. Sports Playing Field. A further 22 young people from the sixth form stated a need in the area for a local ATM/Cash Machine, with no withdrawal fees. Parkland Priorities: 1. Playground for older children, 2. Youth Centre, 3. Sports Playing Field, 4. Skate Park, 5. Multi Use Games Area. We are currently carrying out door to door visits within the area, to establish resident’s opinions, relating to the above priorities from the children and young people, and any additional suggestions they may have. Further to these visits, we will hold an open public meeting, to inform the community of our findings and opinions to date. This meeting will give residents the opportunity to discuss the findings, talking through any concerns and opinions they may have. This public meeting will be held at Parklands Church, Maes y Gollen, on the 22nd of July, at 6pm. Everyne is Welcome to the meeting, Please join in to have your say.
